Baby Safety Checklist
  The Baby Safety Checklist
  Yes No
1. Our baby's crib meets all current National Safety Standards.
bullet Corner posts should be 1/16 of an inch or shorter as infants clothing could get caught, causing strangulation.
bullet Distance between crib slats should be 2 3/8 inches or less to avoid the child's head becoming trapped.
bullet Always lock the side rail.
bullet
2. We use a car seat that is the right choice for our baby's age and weight.
bullet Place infants in rear-facing seats until they are one year old AND at least 20 lbs.
bullet Children over one and between 20-40 lbs. Should be in a forward-facing child safety seat.
bullet When properly installed in the vehicle, the car seat should not move back and forth or side to side more than one inch.
bullet
3. Our baby is never left alone in or near water.
bullet Children can drown in one inch of water in a bathtub, bucket or toilet bowel
bullet Home pools should be surrounded by a four sided, five foot fence with a self-closing latch gate.
bullet
4. We protect our baby from falls off furniture or down stairs.
bullet Never leave a baby unattended on furniture.
bullet Always keep one hand on baby when changing diapers.
bullet Use safety gates at the tops and bottoms of stairs.
bullet
5. We protect our baby from scalds and burns.
bullet Set your water heater at 120 degrees or lower
bullet Always check bath water for "hot spots."
bullet Consider anti-scald devices for faucets and shower heads.
bullet
6. A working carbon monoxide detector is in our home.
bullet Even small amounts of carbon monoxide can cause life threatening illness or death to young children.
bullet
7. We have a working smoke detector in our baby's room and outside every bedroom on every floor.
bullet Check smoke detectors once a month to ensure proper operation.
bullet Plan and practice home escape routes.
bullet
8. We buy age appropriate toys for our baby.
bullet Read and follow toy package age and safety guidelines.
bullet Small parts from toys for older children can choke younger children.
bullet
9. We have safeguarded our windows.
bullet Consider installing safety guards on second floor and higher windows.
bullet Window screens are not safety guards.
bullet Never place a crib near a window.
bullet Use safety tassels or cord wind-ups with curtains and blinds to prevent strangulation.
bullet
10. Household cleaners, medicines and vitamins are stored locked up and away from the baby.
bullet Buy child resistant packaging.
bullet Keep poisonous substances and plants out of sight and reach of children behind locked cabinet doors and drawers.
bullet
11. We always put our baby to sleep on his or her back and do not keep toys in the crib.
bullet Sleeping on their backs reduces the risk of suffocation.
bullet Babies can also suffocate from items left in the crib that fall on their faces.
bullet
12. We are prepared for emergencies and are certified in infant and child CPR and First Aid.
bullet Place emergency numbers next to each telephone.
bullet Be sure to have a first aid kit in the house.
