Immersive medical training in critical skills and difficult communications

The Kinsley Family Foundation Medical Simulation Center at WellSpan York Hospital is a multidisciplinary teaching space that serves the training needs of nine residency programs:

Our teaching space consists of three multiuse rooms, two classrooms and three mock clinic rooms. In addition to procedural, operative and emergency training, residents hone communication skills by interacting with standardized patients, engaging in difficult conversations.

A team including the center’s medical director, a full-time simulation center technical director and a simulation technologist work with teaching faculty. Together, they maintain our state-of-the-art learning center and create innovative teaching models to engage residents in immersive, experiential learning activities.

We’re on a mission to develop and maintain a standard of healthcare excellence by advancing patient safety, collaboration and discovery. Our vision is to inspire all generations of healthcare teams by creating innovative, experiential learning that delivers exceptional care and promotes community engagement.

The center opened in July 2008 and expanded in September 2009 to its current size of 4,500 square feet. Total training time of residents in the center exceeds 5,000 hours annually.

Duane is the inaugural technical director of the WellSpan York Hospital Simulation Center, starting with the grand opening of the center in 2008. He has overseen an exponential rise in utilization and enthusiasm for simulation training. The Simulation Center is now seen as central to professional training across a broad array of disciplines in the system. His interests are in creating immersive experiential learning models and teaching scenarios and in clinical decision-making.

Paul has been working as the simulation technologist for the WellSpan York Hospital Simulation Center since its opening in 2008. Because of his skill at setting up and managing multiple simultaneous training sessions, the Simulation Center enjoys a high utilization rate and high learner satisfaction scores. His interest lies in facilitating exceptional, high-impact adult learning experiences.

Standardized Patient Educator

Christina holds a Bachelor of Arts with honors in theatre arts from Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia, and is a recipient of the Kathryn Johnson Young Theatre Arts Award. She earned her Teaching Artist Certification from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and a teaching certification from the National Center for Creative Aging. Christina has 15 years of experience as a standardized patient at the College of Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, Johns Hopkins Medicine Simulation Center in Baltimore, and the Kinsley Family Foundation Medical Simulation Center, serving the last four years as the Standardized Patient Educator. Christina specializes in collaborating with medical professionals to develop case materials and training caring professionals to serve as standardized patients, bringing to life realistic patient portrayals and offering specific, succinct and constructive feedback to learners in our medical community.
